Similar to the first volume of «Costa Rica Mushrooms» (Mata, 2003), this second volume covers 90 of the most distinctive, although not necessarily most common, species. The text clearly states where the mushrooms can be found by specifying the different conservation areas into which Costa Rica is divided. The field guide consists of two sections. The Introduction contains general information on mushrooms, including morphology and the relationships they develop within their environment. The second part offers a technical description of each species to aid in field identification of mushrooms using simple visual examination. Each description includes a color photograph of the species, along with brief explanations of size, shape, habitat, seasonality (months when the species can be seen), uses, local distribution by conservation area, and distribution worldwide. The description also highlights a few distinctive features as an aid in identification.
